Tempo

About 15 years ago I was fortunate enough to catch an interview with the late Payne Stewart on how he maintained his fluid tempo.  He incorporated a simple drill into all of his practice sessions. “Once I have finished my warm up routine,” he said, “ I randomly go through my bag hitting each club once.” He explained that he might hit his driver followed by a pitching wedge. Next he would hit a 3 iron then a 7 iron and then maybe a 3 wood followed by a sand wedge. He felt that he could not only maintain his tempo more consistently in this manner, but also have more confidence in his swing thus allowing the club to do the work.

So, the next time you’re on the range try to at least hit a 9 iron or two in between your clubs as you transition through the bag. You may be surprised at just how hard you are trying to hit the ball as you get into your longer clubs.
